WoW: Forever and Discord: how to link your account and your guild chat
On this page
Blizzard's Discord guide of 4 November shows how to connect Discord to World of Warcraft: Forever. Forever is a new version of World of Warcraft. Discord is a chat app, and the link passes messages between a Discord channel and your guild chat in the game, for players who link their accounts. A guild is a player-run club. Here's the short version.
What it does
You can link your Battle.net account to your Discord account. Battle.net is Blizzard's account service. Once a guild links its chat to a Discord channel, messages pass between that channel and the guild chat in the game. Blizzard pitches it for planning a raid (a dungeon built for a large group), recruiting for PvP (player versus player, where players fight each other rather than the game) or just keeping up with your guild.
Blizzard's guide covers both modern World of Warcraft, another version of the game, and Forever.
Link your own account
- Press Escape to open the Game Menu.
- Open Options.
- In the Social tab, pick the new option, Enable Discord Functionality.
When you choose to connect, some more screens follow to finish the link, and you'll be asked to confirm it. Log in to Discord first, Blizzard says, before you try.
Link a guild to a Discord channel
This part has two halves. First, an administrator of the guild's Discord server, a community space on Discord, has to give the chosen channel three permissions:
| Discord permission | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Manage Channels | Edit the channel's settings |
| View Channel | See and read the channel |
| Send Messages | Post in the channel |
The rest happens in the game, done by the guild leader or by officers with the right permissions. Officers are guild members given extra powers.
- Press J to open the Guild & Communities panel.
- Pick the Roster tab on the right.
- Pick Guild Settings at the bottom right.
- Under the Guild Control dropdown, pick Discord Settings.
- That window lists every Discord server you belong to. Click one.
- Pick a channel that can be linked from the dropdown, and click the link.
You can also put the Discord chat in a channel of its own inside the game.
How the chat looks
Once you're linked, you can tell whether a message came from Discord or from the game, and you can set up your chat tabs to match. If a player hasn't linked their own account, Blizzard says the Discord chat won't show their messages from the game.
You also choose which name shows when your messages arrive from Discord. The Display Name dropdown lists three choices:
| Choice | Which name shows |
|---|---|
| Default | The game's own pick, currently Last Online Character |
| Last Online Character Name | The last character on your Battle.net account that was online in this guild |
| Discord Global Name | Your Global Name from Discord |
A guild leader can change the guild's Discord settings at any time. One of those settings decides where Discord messages land: the normal /guild chat channel, or a new /discord channel just for them. Those are chat channel names you type after a slash.
What it means: who does what
Our reading of the guide, sorted by who you are. Blizzard's post walks the steps in order; this is the same ground split into jobs.
| If you are | What you do | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Any player | Link your own Battle.net account to Discord, since an unlinked player's messages from the game don't show there | Game Menu, Options, Social tab |
| An administrator of the guild's Discord server | Give the chosen channel Manage Channels, View Channel and Send Messages | Discord |
| The guild leader, or an officer with the right permissions | Link that channel to the guild | Guild & Communities panel (J), Roster, Guild Settings, Guild Control, Discord Settings |
| The guild leader | Decide whether Discord messages go to /guild or to their own /discord channel | The guild's Discord settings |
Our reading: if your guild's messages from the game aren't showing in Discord, the first thing to check is that each person has linked their own account. Blizzard's guide says the Discord chat won't show an unlinked player's messages from the game. For launch times and how to get in, see our release-date piece.
