Jagex says Dragonwilds 1.0 ends Kuldra's story, not the game

RuneScape: Dragonwilds launches out of early access on 15 September 2026, and Jagex has now said what happens after. A message from Mod Dutch frames 1.0 as the end of the Dragon Queen's story rather than the end of the game, and promises a multi-year run of updates with more detail at Runefest in October.

What was actually committed to

What 1.0 concludes The Kuldra Saga, with the Scorned Wilderness raid as its finish
What continues Ashenfall, described as still hidden from the rest of Gielinor

Our take: what it means for players

Saying this out loud before launch is worth more than it looks, and it is also not a roadmap.

The genuine fear about a survival game leaving early access is that 1.0 is the exit, not the milestone: the studio ships the ending, the reviews land, the team moves on and the Discord slowly notices. Jagex naming a multi-year plan in advance, and pointing at Runefest for the detail, removes the ambiguity that usually costs a game its population in the month after release. Whether it is true will be visible by about February.

The framing deserves a second look too. Jagex describes its RuneScape titles as ongoing projects that are never done, which is the honest description of what has kept two versions of this game alive for twenty-five years. Applying that to a survival game is not obviously right, because survival games live and die on a finished, coherent world rather than a content drip. It is a claim about intent, and intent is not content.

What we would want before calling this a commitment is a single date. Skills, quests, regions and bosses listed without one is the shape of an aspiration, and the only checkable thing here is Runefest in October. We will hold it there.

What's next

1.0 arrives on 15 September, and Runefest follows in October 2026 with no day announced. The launch is on the calendar and on the release tracker, each with the day we last checked it against Jagex's own pages.

Common questions

Is RuneScape: Dragonwilds finished at 1.0?

No. Jagex's Mod Dutch says the 15 September release concludes the Kuldra Saga, with players entering the Scorned Wilderness raid to defeat the Dragon Queen, but that development continues as a multi-year journey covering skills, quests, regions, bosses, enemies and rewards.

When will Jagex say more about Dragonwilds after launch?

Closer to launch, and then in more detail at Runefest in October 2026. Mod Dutch first set out the position during the Runefest 2026 preview livestream, about one hour and 28 minutes in.

What happens to Ashenfall's story after Kuldra?

It continues. Mod Dutch says Ashenfall stays hidden and unknowable to the rest of Gielinor, blocked by ancient magic, and that this unexplored stretch of the Sixth Age is where the story develops next.
